Class 2 (Year 2)

Welcome to Year 2 at Wakefield Methodist (VC) Junior, Infant and Nursery School.

Mrs Ward and Mrs Harris are the class teachers and are supported by Mrs Spindler.

In Year 2 we encourage children to learn in an exciting, creative and supportive environment. Each child is treated as an individual and encouraged to take greater control of their own learning as they are moving towards the end of Key Stage 1.

The children are taught Literacy, Numeracy, Science, ICT, as well as Physical Education, Religious Education, Design Technology, Art, Music, History and Geography. Furthermore, we focus on SEAL - Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning, which encourages children to take more responsibility for their own actions. This in turn enables them to choose good behaviour, increases self-esteem and helps them to talk about their feelings in a supported way.

We teach the curriculum through an essential question which is set each term. The essential question centres all subjects around answering the essential question and includes themes such as 'What makes Britain great?', 'Famous People', 'Oceans and Seas', 'Castles, Knights and Dragons' and ‘The Great Outdoors’.

Our two School Council Representatives are chosen by the children each year and take our ideas and share them with the rest of the School Council. Our Collective Worship Representative is also chosen by the children each year.

We have lots of fun in Year 2 and there are many opportunities for children to consolidate their learning through taking part in activities such as a visit to the seaside, where we enjoy learning more about the features of seaside places. We also enjoy a visit to Fairburn Ings where we enjoy pond dipping and minibeast hunting! We enjoy taking part in Key Stage 1 performances throughout the year where we get to show off our singing talents!

We have a 'Star of the Week' to celebrate success within our class, we also have a 'Scientist of the Week' to highlight the importance of Science within our curriculum. To encourage and reward our fabulous writers we have a writing bear who goes home with one child each week with a 'Star Writer' certificate.

"We love working in Year 2! The children are a real pleasure to teach." Mrs Ward & Mrs Harris, Class Teachers.
