At Wakefield Methodist (VC) J,I & N School we are committed to providing all of our children with the opportunity to develop their higher order thinking skills; these skills are then developed so that they can apply them to the wider world context, by making real world applications. We are proud to develop these opportunities with a range of approaches, where relevant, including our new initiatives of Project Based Learning, Immersive environments and Peer Critique, all encompassed within a creative curriculum. We aim this year to move the school towards a model of excellence across the whole curriculum. Children will be encouraged to collaborate and redraft their work until it is the best it can be.

Teachers are facilitators and pupils are engaged in collaborative, self-directed learning. We listen to the needs of the pupils and develop a personalised learning process. The process, intrinsically involves all stakeholders, including parents and governors.

English

As a core subject, all English skills are taught both discretely and across all aspects of the curriculum. We ensure that all children develop their reading and writing skills which can then support them throughout their life. We ensure that well planned curriculum coverage provides children in all Key Stages with opportunities to put their skills into practice in real-life situations and scenarios, our immersive learning environments allow this to happen organically. We encourage all children to read and write at home with weekly year group based homework.

Mathematics

Mathematics is a core subject and we teach children all of the basic mathematical skills that will enable them to be confident mathematicians. All skills are taught discretely and then well-planned opportunities are provided to develop and practice these skills in a real-life context. The immersive environment helps to support this and the children become purposeful problem solvers and deeper thinkers. All mathematical work is supported with weekly homework.

Science

As a core subject, Science is taught in a very investigative way. Children are encouraged to involve themselves actively and practically, by challenging themselves and applying their knowledge and understanding and working scientifically. Immersive and real world applications are provided, so that children across the school can plan, predict and explain their findings, with adults facilitating the learning.

Humanities

Humanities consists of History, Geography, Religious Education and Modern Foreign Languages. At Wakefield Methodist (VC) J,I & N School we ensure that all children learn about events and people from the past, alongside a broad understanding of where we are in the world. The children develop a rich environmental and geographical understanding. This is strengthened with the deep awareness of cultural, moral and spiritual understanding of the world. This year, Key stage Two are learning French.

Creative

We pride ourselves on providing our pupils with a rich and creative curriculum. At Wakefield Methodist (VC) J,I & N School  , creative learning is intrinsic to the way we learn, through drama, dance, music and art. Children explore a range of skills, celebrating, communicating and expressing themselves. Our cross-curricular approach, ensures that children broaden their awareness of other cultures. We see creativeness as a tool to channel teamwork and empathy and to be inspired by the wider world.

Technologies

At Wakefield Methodist (VC) J,I & N School we pride ourselves on providing all children with 21st Century approaches to learning. We are preparing them to be part of a world where technology is intrinsic. We understand the need to develop our pupils with the technological skills to use in their everyday and working lives. The summer of 2015 has seen the school invest heavily in new technologies. A new state of the art ICT suite has been built, new touch screen LCDs have been installed in each classroom, a new server for the whole school has been installed and a new managed wireless network is now in place to ensure the children can access the technologies they need.

Well-Being

At Wakefield Methodist (VC) J,I & N School  we promote a well balanced approach to fitness and having a healthy lifestyle. Children partake in Physical Education weekly, as well as having opportunities to join sports clubs after school. Our exciting and imaginative PE lessons develop key physical skills. We also use skilled PE coaches, which enable children to develop their skills of sportsmanship, all of which they can transfer to their lives in the future.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education is a fundamental part of the grounding at Wakefield Methodist (VC) J,I & N School . We ensure that all children have an understanding of themselves and others. They develop an awareness of who they are and how to become a positive, confident member of society.
